Frame and Underside of
Car
This was one of the main
reasons I decided to purchase the car. The frame on this car is
very solid and very clean. Even after the neglect this car has
received and the fact it's been stored outside for a number of
years the frame looks excellent. Very little surface rust and
that's only in a few places. Like a house, if the foundation is
solid everything else can be repaired and the frame on this car is
very solid and really needs no work.
The suspension all looks good including the rubber bushings.
The only real questionable part of the underside of the car is the
exhaust system. It's rusty looking but from limited checking of it
it still seems to be pretty solid and strong. A more thorough
examination of it still needs to be done though to determine if the
current exhaust system can be saved or will need to be replaced. In
either case, I'm strongly considering replacing the current
mufflers with something different to give the car a deeper, richer
exhaust sound more appropriate for a Corvette. After starting and
listening to the current system it's just too quiet and I feel that
a Corvette deserves an exhaust sound deserving of the car.
Im not interested in going to side pipes on this car like we have
on the '65, but rather keep the undercar exhaust with better
sounding mufflers.
If it turns out that the exhaust system does have to be replaced,
I'll also consider going with large sized pipes from the exhaust
manifolds back to allow for a better breathing system overall. By
going with a larger sized exhaust system you reduce back pressure
and increase horsepower.
I'll make that decision when the time comes for it.
